Understanding Speciality Contact Lenses

Some eye conditions require customised speciality contact lenses.

OrthoKeratology Contact Lenses

The process of fitting these custom-made lenses is initially quite intensive and will last for six months. After this, clients are recommended to have an annual eye exam with us.

To begin we start with a full eye examination which includes specific mapping of the cornea and checks their suitability for Ortho K. Assuming your eyes are suitable, a custom lens is made and you will be fitted with them to wear overnight. The following morning the effect on your eyes will be assessed.

With most people 70% of the reshaping is obtained during the first week, and 100% within 21 days. It may be necessary to make some alterations throughout the process hence the need for regular checks during the fitting process. To ensure clear vision during the day the lenses must be worn each night to maintain the cornea in its correct shape.

Keratoconus Contact Lenses

Treatment of keratoconus depends on its severity and can be corrected using glasses, soft contact lenses or custom made Rigid Contact Lenses (RGP).

In moderate to severe cases of keratoconus, the cornea becomes abnormal in shape so that glasses won’t provide clear vision. In these cases, a rigid contact lens is required to provide a new regular optical surface to correct vision. These lenses are custom-made to the shape of the cornea.

Often, where vision can’t be improved with spectacles, contact lenses can be funded by a subsidy through the Ministry of Health.

Rigid contact lenses are the most common form of correction for keratoconus. The hard contact lens fitting needs to be exact which will take several appointments with one of our optometrists.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral lenses are large rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses that cover the entire cornea, landing on the conjunctiva and sclera. This design provides a secure and stable fit, offering unique advantages for various eye conditions.

Designed and manufactured for particular eye conditions including irregular corneas, keratoconus, corneal grafts, severe dry eye, corneal scarring and ocular surface diseases.

Our optometrists can guide you to the best lens solution and complete the necessary fitting, mapping, lens design to ensure the best vision and comfort is achieved.

Contact lens subsidy may be applied for by the Ministry of Health.
